ABOUT THE ARTIST

Born in 1959 in the Midnapur district of West Bengal, Sunirmal Maiti completed his BFA from Kala Bhavana Santiniketan in 1982. He continued his MFA from MSU Baroda the same year. After a hiatus from the art world in the 1990s, Sunirmal returned as a full-time painter in 2006 and settled in Hyderabad. His first solo exhibition took place at Lakshana Art Gallery in 2007. Sunirmal received a lot of praise for his artwork and then moved to Santiniketan in 2008, seeking a holistic space immersed in nature, away from monotony. of noisy urban life. Since then, the artist has participated in numerous group and individual exhibitions, convened and organized various projects, and has also been a guest lecturer on printmaking.

Mythology and mysticism have been subjects of my artistic interest since 2004. We live in a world that is rapidly transforming. Globalization and the demand for advertising have meant that we are saturated with images and their increasingly numerous copies. Through my practice, I articulate a dialogue between this reality and a mythical past. I am inspired by the historical artistic styles of India, from the dynamic frescoes of Ajanta to the refined forms of the Mughal and Pahari schools of miniatures. Tempera, my process of choice, has helped me get closer to the ethereal quality I identify in past artistic traditions. As I explore motifs and stylistic peculiarities of this visual narrative, I build on that elusive quality that is instinctively identified as Indian. How important is it today? How do these pictorial traditions exchange with the contemporary? These are the questions I continue to explore in my practice.
