ABOUT THE ARTIST

Born in Calcutta in 1947, Shuvaprasanna completed his graduation from the College of Art, Rabindra Bharti Indian University, Calcutta in 1969. He was an active member of the Calcutta Painters group.

The city of Calcutta has always figured prominently in his work. His themes come from his interactions with his urban environment, his illness and squalor, his violence and vulnerability, and everything that aggravates his existential agony. In the 1960s and 1970s, his work was influenced by the political turbulence and violence of Calcutta.

Shuvaprasanna has depicted different moods of the city and its people, its places, and all the facets that make it distinctive. As he states, there is no other city like Calcutta anywhere in the world. Deep down he found innumerable themes and themes. He does not simply represent reality as fact and his presentation of reality often has dreamlike elements. In terms of technique, Shuvaprasanna boasts a precise, finely executed style that produces an unmistakable visual intensity. He works comfortably in a variety of mediums, including oil on canvas, charcoal, and mixed media.

Explaining his thought process and his philosophy as a painter, he points out that what every creator wishes to achieve is universal appeal. There should be no problem with language when judging the merits of a painting. We must go beyond the themes, beyond the words. There can be no clear definition of feelings, nor should we wish to seek a logical explanation.

Shuvaprasanna's series of paintings, Icons, and Illusions, marked a creative breakthrough for the artist in several ways. While in the past he had been known as an urban artist with themes that reflected the roads, alleys, birds, and people of his native Kolkata, in Icons and Illusions he enjoyed more the deities and flowers. The iconic figures of Krishna, Radha, and Ganesha that found lyrical expression in the Icons series are modern representations and sophisticated idealizations of the same images in popular media.

His work has been exhibited extensively in India and internationally in Bangladesh, Singapore, France, Switzerland, and Germany.
