ABOUT THE ARTIST

Reena Saini Kallat is an artist absorbed in the endless cycle of nature and the fragility of the human condition in her hands. All of her works, whether installations, photographs, paintings, or sculptures, reflect the constant changes between movements of construction and collapse, birth, death, rebirth, defeat, and resurgence. There seems to be no greater inspiration in her works than the invincible and indefatigable Prakriti, or nature. A force that constantly creates and destroys, never resting as one world replaces another, only to finally end itself.

Reena shows us how these dualities work all the time and how we are blind to them, whether by illustrating the transience of our consumer culture or showing us how important it is that things like food and shelter are not taken for granted.

Kallat gives the mundane a surreal twist when she paints cars and houses on inflated balloons, or towering structures made of slices of bread confronted by fantastical, androgynous creatures. Balloons are fragile, so placing these aspirational things inside them is a way to convey how ephemeral the objects we most chase after are, she says.

Babies and children also appear provocatively in several of Kallat's works. All of these works touch on motifs found in all of her art: the cycle of life and images presented in a very exotic and unusual way.

Kallat graduated from Sir J.J. School of Art in 1996 and she belongs to the new generation of Indian artists who have successfully reinterpreted and given a new facet to abstract art. In one of her most recent installations, part of the 2002 Kala Ghoda Art Fest, she used beach sand to create seven uterine forms on the ground representative of the seven islands that came together to form the city of Mumbai. This piece, called The Seven Faces of Dust, represents once again the impermanence of everything we long for, and also of our momentary lives: we must erase it after its exhibition and return the sand to the beach.

Reena also trained as a Bharatanatyam dancer for eight years, but it turned out that painting was her calling and her main love. She remembers the first sample of hers: that of some colors of posters that she painted when she was in class IX. Kallat held her first professional solo exhibition, Orchards of Homegrown Secrets, in Mumbai, in 1998, and since then she has held many more exhibitions of her work. Kallat has also received several notable honors, including the Gladstone Solomon Prize for painting.

She lives and works in Mumbai.
