ABOUT THE ARTIST

Born in Maharashtra in 1924, Vasudeo S Gaitonde considered his work to be non-objective and believed that there was no such thing as abstract art. Evoking subliminal depths, Gaitonde's paintings are known for their spiritual quality and characteristic silence, as meditative as it is eternal and meaningful. The simple, large surfaces of layered paint possess an inherent quality of light.

Gaitonde graduated in painting from the Sir J J School of Art in 1948 and subsequently joined the Progressive Artists Group. For Gaitonde, art was a complete process in itself. Exploring its inner spaces and transitory realities helped him move toward himself. A non-conformist, Gaitonde always stayed away from anything alien to his identity as a painter. Over the years, he evolved as a painter who was increasingly meticulous in presenting his identity.

Gaitonde's work has been exhibited in several exhibitions in India and abroad. In 2014-15, the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York organized a major retrospective of the artist's works, titled V S. Gaitonde Painting as Process, Painting as Life. His work is part of several Indian and foreign collections, including that of the Museum of Modern Art, in New York. He was awarded the first prize at the Young Asian Artists Exhibition in Tokyo in 1957 and the J D Rockefeller III Fellowship in 1964. In recognition of his contributions to Indian art, Gaitonde was awarded the Padma Shri in 1971.

Gaitonde lived and worked in New Delhi and died in August 2001.
