ABOUT THE ARTIST

The remnants of the traditional lifestyle of my youth awaken my memories and transport me to this bygone era.

Suhas Bahulkar's paintings are a result of his childhood memories, and nostalgia for the disappearing culture of his formative years. It was largely inspired by the traditional lifestyle of Maharashtra the style of dress, in particular, the Marwari a nine-yard sari and the old wadis the traditional home of this State, with its faded murals and walls. broken, representations that find a place in his work.

The images in Bahulkar's paintings are that of a superimposition of family portraits in sepia tones, against the backdrop of traditional Maharashtrian architecture. The predominance of the use of gold leaf in his works is a symbol of the wealth of the era he describes. He prefers not to limit himself to any specific medium. I decided on the topic and chose the medium accordingly. He is very particular about the technical aspects of his paintings. For him, the medium varies depending on the look, texture, or any other particular quality he wants the painting to ultimately have. He has worked with acrylic, oil, and watercolor, and has also experimented with paper, canvas, and wood. The worn and worn look of his paintings also extends to the frames of him, to convey an overall effect of age.

Born in 1954 in Pune, Bahulkar obtained a diploma in Painting from the Sir JJ School of Art, Mumbai, in 1975. He has exhibited his works in India and internationally, most recently in Hong Kong, in 1999. He lives and works in Bombay.
