ABOUT THE ARTIST

Shyamal Mukherjee is an artist who has spent his entire life in Calcutta, venturing out only to attend exhibitions of his works and speaking only in Bengali. He was born there in 1961 and spent all his college years at Santiniketan, first completing his BFA in 1987 and then his MFA in 1989 from Rabindra Bharati University.

In Mukherjee's work, we see the strong figurative tradition of the Bengal School carried forward and interpreted in a very contemporary language. Mukherjee says that he loves traveling alone to new places on buses and trains as most of my inspiration comes from people-watching. It is no surprise that each figure in his work has a separate and interesting story to tell. Most of the people Mukherjee paints are artists of some kind, performing for everyone else, something we all do every day of our lives. Mukherjee's figures are dressed in the bright, almost garish orange, red, and green outfits that street performers wear, but their eyes are staring and drawn, their faces almost cartoon-like and their fingers chubby, creating the irony. and the pathos that surrounds them. They are extremely evident. For one of his recent exhibitions in Mumbai, the artist decided to use beggars and street vendors as the subject of his works, essaying their pitiful condition in his characteristic style.

The artist also likes to focus on the fact that each individual has a lot in common with others. This is why he paints people in pairs or larger groups, highlighting that, although they are physically separated and different from each other, there is no real difference between their characters and behaviors.

Mukherjee's favorite medium is reverse oil or acrylic painting on transparent acrylic sheets, and he swears that although he may change his themes and themes, inventing new ones for new exhibitions, he will never abandon painting in this medium. Although Mukherjee loves painting, he says he has many other hobbies. He teaches children in his spare time and says that he learns more from them than they realize. He also collects rural artworks and handicrafts of Bengali artisans.
