ABOUT THE ARTIST

Samindranath Majumdar's paintings recall his own experiences, using abstraction and multiple layers of paint to redefine space and memory. His works walk the fine line between completely abstract and representative forms, questioning the role that narrative threads play in the experience of art.

Samindranath Majumdar, currently a professor at the Indian College of Art and Drawing, Calcutta, was born in 1966. He received his bachelor's and master's degrees in Visual Arts from Rabindra Bharti University, Calcutta, after completing his first bachelor's degree in science from the University of Calcutta.

The artist has participated in several solo exhibitions since the first one in 1993 at the Birla Academy of Art and Culture in Kolkata. His most recent solo exhibitions include those held at Gallerie Ganesha, New Delhi, in 2005, Gandhara Art Gallery, Kolkata, in 2005, and Triveni Art Gallery, New Delhi, in 2001. Among the recent group exhibitions in which his Works are those held at the Gandhara Gallery, Kolkata, in 2004, the Rashtriya Lalit Kala Akademi Eastern Regional Art Exhibition at the Manipur State Museum, in 2003, and the Rashtriya Lalit Kala Akademi Eastern Regional Art Exhibition at the Gallery of CIMA Art, Kolkata, in 2002. In 2001, Majumdar was awarded the Ebrahim Alkazi Endowment Award and, in 2000, he was honored with the annual award of the All India Fine Arts and Crafts Society (AIFACS).
