ABOUT THE ARTIST

Devi Prasad Roy Chowdhury learned painting from Abanindranath Tagore, life drawing and portraiture from Signor Boyess, and sculpture from Hiranmoy Roychoudhuri, with further training in Italy. Equally comfortable with plaster and paint, Roy Chowdhury developed his skills in bronze casting and executed paintings that were an amalgamation of the Chinese technique, the Japanese washing process, and his method of scratching. However, his early paintings had Tagore's influence.

Devi Prasad Roy Chowdhury joined Madras College of Art as a student in 1928 and became its director. was appointed the first Indian principal of the Government College of Arts and Crafts, Chennai (then known as the Government College of Industrial Arts). He was only 30 years old at the time.

He chose his figures from the crowd on the streets in preference to studio models. but this multi-talented individual was already on his way to becoming a legend and one of the best-known Indian artists of the 1940s and 1950s or the period of struggle for independence.

One of his first multiple-figure reliefs was the Travancore Temple Entry Proclamation which he completed in 1930. the bronze statue of Chithira Tirunal Balarama Varma, the last ruler of Travancore who in a historic proclamation opened Hindu temples to all castes and communities, at Thiruvananthapuram.

It was at this time that he created his most famous pieces, The Triumph of Labor and Mahatma Gandhi, both sculptures that adorn the beautiful Marina Beach in Chennai. The second sculpture portrays Gandhi in the marching posture towards Dandi, which will be remembered forever and has been reproduced many times around the world. and Patna Martyrs Monument sculpture etc.

He was honored by the colonial government as the Most Exalted Member of the British Empire (M.B.E) in 1937. In 1958, he was awarded the Padma Bhushan by the President of India, and he received an honorary doctorate from Rabindra Bharati University in 1968.
