HONORS AND AWARD
2008 Received Taj Gaurav Award
1986 Received the Rabindra Bharati University Gold Medal for Excellence in Fine Arts.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Graduated from Indian College of Art and Drawing with a first-class qualification in 1986. Gold Medal for Excellence in Fine Arts awarded by Rabindra Bharati University in 1986. Received the Taj Gaurav Award in 2008. Honored by the President of India as an artist. resident at The Rashtrapati Bhavan in November 2019. I started my career as a billboard artist and later worked as a graphic designer at The Economic Times.

I watched in amazement as the rays of the autumn sun fell on the green rice fields, the clouds gathering on the horizon, the harvesting of rice, the fishermen at work, the making of boats, the potters making clay dolls.

Chandra Bhattacharjee's canvases are languid and removed from the urban world. Dark men and women exist in an ethereal realm outside the madness of everyday city life, carrying out their daily tasks. Bhattacharjee's compositions are influenced by the rural and tribal associations he had the opportunity to work with, particularly the Santhal tribe of Calcutta. The textural quality of his paintings is very reminiscent of the traditional mud walls of these towns, smeared with cow dung.

The colors of Bhattacharjee's paintings are both muted and vibrant. Warm pinks and full-bodied blues, interspersed with areas of white, calm the senses. He uses the cross-hatching technique, a method most often used in pencil drawings, in black, over color, this adds depth to his colors. Bhattacharjee's paintings tell a story, but it is a story without beginning or end and it flows perfectly from the artist to the surface of the canvas. The world created by Bhattacharjee is borderless, where humans, animals, and surreal creatures coexist in harmony.

Bhattacharjee, although influenced by rural and tribal themes, has a firm academic foundation. He has studied at the Indian College of Art and Draftsmanship, Calcutta. He received a gold medal from Rabindra Bharati University, Calcutta, in 1986. He has held several group and solo exhibitions of his works in Delhi, Mumbai, and Calcutta.
