ABOUT THE ARTIST

Ananda Das, son of painter Lakshmi Narayan Das, was born in 1974 in Calcutta. His first art teacher was his father, who was born in 1942 and is a renowned commercial artist. It is his father who has guided him with his artistic advice. Ananda began studying at the Bengal School of Arts when he was fourteen. When he was 18, he decided that academic instruction was not bringing him any benefit and began working alone. He has received numerous scholarships for his skills. He is a painter of landscapes, figure studies, and portraits. He has won many accolades for his work, including several Gold Medals of Honour. He graduated from City College with a Bachelor of Commerce degree in 1993. He is an active member of the Calcutta Painters Group.

Ananda Das started his career in 1994 and never looked back. He is a self-taught painter. He has no formal degree or diploma in art or painting. He works in different media such as watercolor, acrylic, oil, charcoal, and mixed media. Most of his paintings are based on the realistic and figurative. The Rickshaw Puller series is one of the best subjects he has painted. He uses the rickshaw as a symbol of harmony between man and his wearer, between purpose and silent strength. The running feet and rushing wheels are a simple proof of what substance, will and endurance can conquer. He also likes the play of light and shadow. For that reason, he applies charcoal and Conti to capture the play of light and shadow on a black-and-white base. He is one of the most prominent painters in Kolkata.

The city of Kolkata has always figured prominently in Ananda's work, especially his rickshaw pullers. His work began to take on the style and character that is now associated with his name. Most of Ananda's work has a religious or mystical expression and a romantic spirit. His early paintings were strongly influenced by political turmoil and violence around the world. Ananda Das displays a precise and finely executed style that produces an unmistakable visual intensity. He works comfortably in a variety of media, including oil on canvas, charcoal, mixed media, and watercolor.

Ananda Das' series of paintings, icons, and illusions marked a creative breakthrough for the artist in several ways. His work has been widely exhibited around the world and has won several awards. Ananda is a teacher, facilitator, and painter. He has exhibited in several shows and group exhibitions in India. His work can be seen in many public and private collections in India and abroad. Ananda Das has exhibited his paintings in art galleries in India such as the Jahangir Art Gallery, the French Consulate, the Academy of Fine Arts, and the Oberoi Tower. His witty titles are often as important as the paintings themselves, which combine an economy and precision of technique with the marks of a seemingly limitless imagination.
