ABOUT THE ARTIST
Atin Basak says that his recent work represents the beliefs and ways of life in the East or East. The recluses and sages he creates in his etchings and lithographs on paper have a certain quality that places them above and beyond the madding crowd of humanity. Although they are alone, they appear to be insightful, judicious, and learned people who have seen and experienced the world as it is, and then have chosen to live apart from it.

In works with titles such as Ermitao and Soledad, the artist's impeccably controlled use of shadow and texture helps build the characters of these subjects that deftly represent their self-confidence and personal power. Basak places Sanskrit letters in these works to similarly represent a sense of ancient tradition, understanding, and wisdom in a world that seems to have forgotten the value of all that is non-modern.

Born in Calcutta in 1966, Atin Basak studied painting in Calcutta and later received his master's degree in printmaking at an art school in Baroda. Throughout his career he has received various awards, including the Charles Wallace India Trust Arts Award 1999-2000 and a scholarship from the French government to work in his country as a visiting artist.

Collections of his works are held at the National Gallery of Modern Art and the Lalit Kala Academy in New Delhi, the Baroda Palace Museum, the British Council in Bombay, as well as in personal collections in Bombay, Calcutta, Baroda, Ahmedabad, Belgium. , Singapore. , Hong Kong, Switzerland, Germany, France, Japan and the United Kingdom.
