ABOUT THE ARTIST

Partha Shaw is a painter who studied at Santiniketan, a place steeped in artistic tradition and history, spawned by masters like Nandalal Bose and the Tagores, and enhanced by modern and contemporary artists like K.G. Subramanyan, Sunil Das and Dharmanarayan Dasgupta. It was at Santiniketan that Partha Shaw developed her imagination and creative vision. But even though Shaw had this rich and overflowing fund to borrow from, he, like most of the other artists there, decided to create a style of his own and add to the heritage that he learned, rather than make use of it. Here she was also able to closely study nature and the works of the great Indian masters. Starting with the singular Indian miniature, Shaw shaped her personal vocabulary of artistic expression, distinctively Indian and at the same time charged with modernity.

Shaw mainly works with landscapes but she handles them in a very contemporary way. Instead of using abstract methods of representation, Shaw, along with other Bengal artists, has used figures in her paintings to represent what she wants. This movement has been very aptly called figurative symbolism, a conscious effort to exhort the virtues of the non-abstract. Shaw explains his work and inspiration Born in decadent, overcrowded and bustling Calcutta, the profound stillness of poorly ornate architectural remains, which seems to have been lost with the advent of modern times, pierces through my subconscious thus forcing a surge of mystery and fantasy conjugated in the human presence. The glory carried by the Indian miniatures lost its importance with the role of time. My searches always tend to glorify that lost gold on a surface that dictates a torn survival in the gloomy darkness. Today I try to incorporate art into Traditional Indian miniature with contemporary modern art. My painting medium is acrylic. To portray architectural solitude I also use some graphic qualities.

Partha Shaw was born in Kolkata in 1971 and received BFA from her and MFA from Visva Bharati University, Santiniketan. Until now, most of his exhibitions have been in his own city, with the exception of a couple of exhibitions in New Delhi. Shaw's first solo exhibition was held in 1995 and hopefully, this young artist, who already has an art movement under his belt, will see many more years of fruitful career waiting for him.
